2015 Humboldt County Spelling Bee Winners (L to R) Conner Johnson, 6th grade, Zane Middle School, Simone Tan, 5th grade, Cutten Elementary, Sofia Potter, 7th grade, McKinleyville Middle School, and Sophia Escudero, 8th grade, Winship Middle School.

Four students are headed for state spelling bee competitions after successfully spelling their way through the 2015 County Spelling Bee held March 14.

With an audience of over 100 watching intently, 10 regional champions in 4th – 6th grade spelled their way through 75 words before two Co-Champions were named: Conner Johnson, a 6th grader at Zane Middle School, and Simone Tan, a 5th grader at Cutten.

The 7th – 9th grade division also started with 10 regional champs and used 23 words before only two remained, both with the same first name (spelled differently)! Sofia Potter, a 7th grader from McKinleyville Middle School, who was also a County Champion last year, and Sophia Escudero, an 8th grader at Winship Middle School, who were named as Co-Champions.

The Rising Stars Foundation provides funds for travel expenses and entrance fees for the two elementary champions to compete in Stockton in April and for the two junior high champions to compete in San Rafael in May.
