With parents and community members cheering them on in an intense atmosphere, the Humboldt County Spelling Bee, now over 30 years old, is held at the Humboldt County Office of Education. Through school and regional competitions, students earn the opportunity to compete at the county level.
The Elementary Divison (grades 4-6) is an oral contest with a one-word miss. Ten regional champions spell their way through such words as xenophobia, lissome, cessation, therapeutic and pseudonym. Two students then travel to the State Competition in Stockton.
The Junior High level (grades 7-9) is a written competition with four misses allowed. Ten regional champions vie for two spots by spelling words like chignon, mignonette, cicerone, ellipsis, and inchoate. The State Competition is held in San Rafael.
